The brief: to produce an Admissions DVD for the college, portraying the life of an undergraduate and giving prospective entrants an idea of how to deal with the interview process.
The Product: Oriel College is one of Oxford’s oldest colleges with many beautiful buildings and a great appetite for academic success.
Target audience: The college looks to attract intelligent students from a wide variety of backgrounds. The DVD would be aimed particularly at helping entrants from schools without a tradition of sending students to Oxbridge.
Strategy: We talked in depth with the College to discover how they wanted to be represented on film. We decided to divide the DVD into several sections. ‘Portrait of a College’ would build a visual impression, complemented by the words of the students themselves, describing their academic and social life. Mock interviews would use commentary from college tutors to give valuable advice to applicants.
Production:. Filming took place at intervals over several months, with many interviews and scenes of college life being recorded. Some of these involved considerable sacrifice on the part of the film crew, for example, getting up at 5 in the morning for the rowers ! After the initial editing process, the film was shown to members of the College and a selection of Sixth Formers for their comments before the final version was agreed upon.
Distribution: The DVD was given an attractive sleeve by a graphic designer and 5000 copies duplicated for distribution to schools at home and abroad.
Comment: Our experience in the world of education led to a more complete understanding of the aims of the college and our empathy with young people helped to put them at their ease in front of the camera, ensuring a more natural result.
“We were daunted by the complicated process of making a DVD but it has been made easy by the co-operation and professionalism of Blue Badger Media. We’re delighted with our DVD and would recommend the company strongly to anyone considering making a film”
Kirstie Fieldhouse, Academic Administrator, Oriel College, Oxford.
